Rust Server Hosting

In Rust the dominant factor is map size, not player count on its own. The RAM gap between a 3000 and a 4500 map is close to double, because the server keeps the entire world state in memory. On top of that, memory use climbs steadily through a wipe cycle as player bases accumulate.

The amounts in the table are the monthly net price of each processor option and match the calculation in the configurator. The value option uses DDR4 memory, the performance option DDR5. Billing period (3, 6, 12, 24, 36 months) and extra resources are calculated in the configurator. Some recommended values exceed this product's maximum, so the price is calculated from the configuration clamped to that limit; for higher resources, review the dedicated servers.

How to choose the hardware

A freshly wiped map uses little memory, while the same server can consume twice as much by the end of the month. Size your plan from the pre-wipe peak, not the post-wipe baseline. Procedural map generation is CPU and storage intensive, and NVMe storage noticeably shortens server boot time.

Which processor family?

Most game servers run on a single thread, so per-core performance matters more than core count.

Ryzen 7950X

The Rust server loop is sensitive to single-core performance, and this family keeps tick time lowest at high player counts.

Intel i9-10980XE

A balanced option for 3000-4000 maps and up to about 100 players.

Setup steps

  1. 1Install with an Ubuntu 22.04 template and download the Rust dedicated server via SteamCMD.
  2. 2Open UDP 28015 (game) and TCP 28016 (RCON).
  3. 3If you plan to use Oxide/uMod, start the vanilla server once before installing plugins.
  4. 4Take a snapshot before each wipe; the first boot after map generation takes a few minutes.
