CS2 Server Hosting

CS2 servers are light on RAM; what matters is latency and tick processing time. A single 10-12 slot server runs on 2 GB, so hosting several instances on one VDS is a common setup. Core count then starts to matter, because each instance runs in its own process.

What is a Counter-Strike 2 server?

A Counter-Strike 2 community server lets you host matches or custom modes under your own rules. The server software is installed through SteamCMD and runs on the Source 2 engine. Its resource profile is what sets CS2 apart: player counts are low (10 for competitive, usually 16 to 64 on community servers) and RAM needs are modest, but the work done per tick is very sensitive to CPU clock speed. So what makes a difference here is a high-clocked core, not more RAM. Networking matters too: in a shooter, latency differences show up directly in gameplay, so the server's geographic proximity to your players can matter more than the hardware.

Recommended plan by player count

These values map one to one onto the VDS plan steps in our catalogue. Intermediate values can also be selected in the configurator.

The amounts in the table are the monthly net price of each processor option and match the calculation in the configurator. The value option uses DDR4 memory, the performance option DDR5. Billing period (3, 6, 12, 24, 36 months) and extra resources are calculated in the configurator.

How to choose the hardware

If you run a single server, the smallest plan is enough and the budget is better spent on processor quality. For multiple instances (retake, deathmatch, tournament servers) budget about 2 GB of RAM and one vCPU per instance. Location choice directly sets player ping: for a Turkish audience, the Bursa location is a clear advantage over hosting abroad.

Which processor family?

Most game servers run on a single thread, so per-core performance matters more than core count.

Intel i9-10980XE

For single servers and small networks a high clock lowers tick time; the most balanced option for CS2.

If you run many instances, core count becomes the deciding factor and this family lowers the cost per instance.

Setup steps

  1. 1Install with an Ubuntu 22.04 template and download the CS2 dedicated server via SteamCMD.
  2. 2Open UDP/TCP 27015, incrementing the port for each additional instance.
  3. 3Set a Game Server Login Token (GSLT), which is required for public server listing.
  4. 4If you install MetaMod/SourceMod, boot the server once clean and verify version compatibility.

Common mistakes

  • Spending on RAM and ignoring clock speed. In CS2 the deciding factor is CPU work per tick; extra RAM does not show up in gameplay.
  • Hosting far from your players. In a shooter a 20 ms difference is noticeable, so location comes before hardware.
  • Setting a tick rate higher than the hardware can sustain. If the server cannot hold the tick, gameplay ends up worse than it would at a lower rate.

Migrating from another provider

The order matters when moving a live server: back up the game files and the database on the old server, install the same version on the new one, import the database, then update the address your players connect to. Move the database last — if both servers stay online together for a while, player data splits in two and cannot be merged afterwards. Do not shut the old server down until the new one is verified.

If you get stuck on a step, open a support ticket; we help with the installation steps.

What is included at Datafex

Fexwall L3/L4 DDoS filtering is included free on every plan. That is the layer a game server needs; a CDN in front of HTTP does not protect the game's UDP traffic.

Every plan uses NVMe SSD. The database runs on the same machine as the game server, so storage latency turns directly into in-game stutter.

Servers are in Türkiye, at the DGN data centre in Bursa. Transit is 100 Gbps domestic and 10 Tbps international.

Setup completes automatically within minutes. Extra IPs, rDNS and firewall rules are managed from the customer panel.
