Minecraft Server Hosting

Minecraft Java Edition runs its main tick loop on a single thread, so most TPS drops come from core speed rather than core count. Optimised server software such as Paper or Purpur clearly improves chunk loading and entity handling, but it does not remove the tick loop's single-core dependency.

What is a Minecraft server?

A Minecraft server hosts a persistent world that players share. For Java Edition, alongside the vanilla server software there are options such as Paper, Spigot, Fabric and Forge; Paper is the most common choice for performance, while Fabric and Forge are used for mod packs. Bedrock Edition needs a different server binary and the two cannot connect directly. Two things drive resource needs: view distance and the number of loaded chunks determine RAM, while the main tick loop determines CPU. Mod packs change the picture entirely — an install with 40 to 50 mods can need two or three times the RAM of a vanilla server. The world file grows over time, so do not size storage against its first-day footprint.

Recommended plan by player count

These values map one to one onto the VDS plan steps in our catalogue. Intermediate values can also be selected in the configurator.

The amounts in the table are the monthly net price of each processor option and match the calculation in the configurator. The value option uses DDR4 memory, the performance option DDR5. Billing period (3, 6, 12, 24, 36 months) and extra resources are calculated in the configurator. Some recommended values exceed this product's maximum, so the price is calculated from the configuration clamped to that limit; for higher resources, review the dedicated servers.

How to choose the hardware

Three things drive RAM: view distance, the number of loaded chunks, and your plugin or mod list. A vanilla 20-player server runs comfortably on 4 GB, while a 60-player network with plugins wants 8-16 GB. Modded servers (Forge/Fabric) can double that. World files grow as chunks are generated, so storage speed is felt directly during world generation.

Which processor family?

Most game servers run on a single thread, so per-core performance matters more than core count.

Ryzen 7950X

Because the tick loop is single-threaded, the family with the highest IPC keeps TPS most stable; our pick for modpacks and higher player counts.

Setup steps

  1. 1Install with an Ubuntu 22.04 template and add OpenJDK 21 (for 1.20.5+).
  2. 2Download the Paper or Purpur jar and set -Xms/-Xmx to about 75% of your plan's RAM.
  3. 3Open TCP port 25565, or UDP 19132 for Bedrock.
  4. 4Enable the snapshot option from the panel for automatic backups, and keep an application-level backup of the world as well.

Common mistakes

  • Sizing RAM for a mod pack as if it were vanilla. An install with 40 to 50 mods easily needs two or three times as much.
  • Leaving view distance at its default and adding resources instead. Lowering view distance is often more effective than adding RAM.
  • Not planning world backups. A backup is the only way back from a corrupted world file, so storage must hold both the growing world and its backups.
  • Not matching the Java version to the server software. Each Paper or Fabric release expects a specific Java version, and a mismatch stops the server before it starts.

Migrating from another provider

The order matters when moving a live server: back up the game files and the database on the old server, install the same version on the new one, import the database, then update the address your players connect to. Move the database last — if both servers stay online together for a while, player data splits in two and cannot be merged afterwards. Do not shut the old server down until the new one is verified.

If you get stuck on a step, open a support ticket; we help with the installation steps.

What is included at Datafex

Fexwall L3/L4 DDoS filtering is included free on every plan. That is the layer a game server needs; a CDN in front of HTTP does not protect the game's UDP traffic.

Every plan uses NVMe SSD. The database runs on the same machine as the game server, so storage latency turns directly into in-game stutter.

Servers are in Türkiye, at the DGN data centre in Bursa. Transit is 100 Gbps domestic and 10 Tbps international.

Setup completes automatically within minutes. Extra IPs, rDNS and firewall rules are managed from the customer panel.
