Rust Server Hosting

In Rust the dominant factor is map size, not player count on its own. The RAM gap between a 3000 and a 4500 map is close to double, because the server keeps the entire world state in memory. On top of that, memory use climbs steadily through a wipe cycle as player bases accumulate.

What is a Rust server?

A Rust server runs a persistent map where players build bases, gather resources and raid each other. Facepunch's server software is installed through SteamCMD, and servers that want plugins typically run Oxide/uMod. The parameter that really drives resource needs is map size: as world size grows, RAM requirements rise non-linearly, because the whole map and everything built on it is held in memory. Player count comes second. There is also the wipe cycle — periodically resetting the map is standard practice in Rust communities and also caps how much accumulates on disk. The server uses several cores, but the main thread is still decisive.

The amounts in the table are the monthly net price of each processor option and match the calculation in the configurator. The value option uses DDR4 memory, the performance option DDR5. Billing period (3, 6, 12, 24, 36 months) and extra resources are calculated in the configurator. Some recommended values exceed this product's maximum, so the price is calculated from the configuration clamped to that limit; for higher resources, review the dedicated servers.

How to choose the hardware

A freshly wiped map uses little memory, while the same server can consume twice as much by the end of the month. Size your plan from the pre-wipe peak, not the post-wipe baseline. Procedural map generation is CPU and storage intensive, and NVMe storage noticeably shortens server boot time.

Which processor family?

Most game servers run on a single thread, so per-core performance matters more than core count.

Ryzen 7950X

The Rust server loop is sensitive to single-core performance, and this family keeps tick time lowest at high player counts.

Setup steps

  1. 1Install with an Ubuntu 22.04 template and download the Rust dedicated server via SteamCMD.
  2. 2Open UDP 28015 (game) and TCP 28016 (RCON).
  3. 3If you plan to use Oxide/uMod, start the vanilla server once before installing plugins.
  4. 4Take a snapshot before each wipe; the first boot after map generation takes a few minutes.

Common mistakes

  • Choosing map size by player count. World size is what drives RAM; the difference between 4500 and 6000 costs more than the player count does.
  • Not planning a wipe cycle. RAM and disk usage both climb as map and building data accumulate; regular wipes cap that on their own.
  • Loading too many plugins and saturating the main thread. Oxide plugins run inside the same tick loop, so server FPS drops as their number grows.
  • Wiping without a backup. A wipe cannot be undone, so take a backup first if you intend to preserve player progress.

Migrating from another provider

The order matters when moving a live server: back up the game files and the database on the old server, install the same version on the new one, import the database, then update the address your players connect to. Move the database last — if both servers stay online together for a while, player data splits in two and cannot be merged afterwards. Do not shut the old server down until the new one is verified.

If you get stuck on a step, open a support ticket; we help with the installation steps.

What is included at Datafex

Fexwall L3/L4 DDoS filtering is included free on every plan. That is the layer a game server needs; a CDN in front of HTTP does not protect the game's UDP traffic.

Every plan uses NVMe SSD. The database runs on the same machine as the game server, so storage latency turns directly into in-game stutter.

Servers are in Türkiye, at the DGN data centre in Bursa. Transit is 100 Gbps domestic and 10 Tbps international.

Setup completes automatically within minutes. Extra IPs, rDNS and firewall rules are managed from the customer panel.
