Counter-Strike 1.6 Server Hosting

A Counter-Strike 1.6 server produces the lightest workload on this list: the HLDS process runs on a few hundred MB of memory and a small slice of one core even at 32 slots. The right question for 1.6 is therefore not "which plan is enough" but "how many game servers can I run on one machine". What decides is network quality rather than resource volume: 1.6's game feel is extremely sensitive to tick and ping, and a 20 ms difference is directly noticeable to players. Modern setups using ReHLDS and ReGameDLL run noticeably more stable than original HLDS.

What is a Counter-Strike 1.6 server?

A Counter-Strike 1.6 server hosts the classic shooter on the GoldSrc engine, which still has an active community. The server software is HLDS, and the plugin ecosystem is built on AMX Mod X, where popular modes such as zombie, jailbreak and deathrun run. On resources CS 1.6 is the lightest game on this list: because the engine is very old, a 32-player server runs comfortably on low RAM and a modest CPU. What decides quality is not hardware but network latency and plugin density. Since many AMX plugins run on the main thread, that is where server performance is actually limited.

The amounts in the table are the monthly net price of each processor option and match the calculation in the configurator. The value option uses DDR4 memory, the performance option DDR5. Billing period (3, 6, 12, 24, 36 months) and extra resources are calculated in the configurator.

How to choose the hardware

A single 32-slot server needs 300-600 MB of memory and a small portion of one core. In practice, 2-3 servers run comfortably on 2 GB of RAM and 1 vCPU, and 10-15 servers on 8 GB with 4 vCPU. An AMX Mod X plugin list, a stats database and custom map packs shift that picture somewhat. The main thing to watch is this: each HLDS process runs on its own thread and is sensitive to tick latency, so packing more than 3-4 servers per core breaks ping consistency. Storage needs are low; map and plugin packs rarely exceed a few GB in total.

Which processor family?

Most game servers run on a single thread, so per-core performance matters more than core count.

Intel i9-10920X

DDR4Value

The value option. 12 cores / 24 threads with DDR4. Because multiple HLDS processes spread across separate threads, core count translates directly into server count here, making per-resource pricing most attractive for multi-server community networks.

DDR5Performance

The performance option. Zen 4 with DDR5. Game feel in 1.6 is extremely sensitive to tick consistency, and high single-core performance keeps ping jitter low when several servers share a core.

Setup steps

  1. 1Install with an Ubuntu 22.04 or Debian 12 template; because HLDS is 32-bit, remember to install the 32-bit compatibility libraries.
  2. 2Download HLDS via SteamCMD or install a ReHLDS/ReGameDLL build; ReHLDS is noticeably more stable than the original.
  3. 3Give each server its own working directory and its own port; starting at 27015 and incrementing is the common layout.
  4. 4Open the port range you use as UDP; 1.6 runs entirely over UDP.
  5. 5If you install AMX Mod X and Metamod, boot each server once clean and let the configuration files generate.
  6. 6Keep the servers behind Fexwall; 1.6 servers are frequently hit by query floods and reflection attacks.

Common mistakes

  • Buying a larger plan than needed. CS 1.6 is very light and extra resources do not show up in gameplay.
  • Treating location as unimportant. In this game network latency decides quality, not hardware.
  • Adding AMX plugins without control. They all run on the main thread and that is where performance is capped.

Migrating from another provider

The order matters when moving a live server: back up the game files and the database on the old server, install the same version on the new one, import the database, then update the address your players connect to. Move the database last — if both servers stay online together for a while, player data splits in two and cannot be merged afterwards. Do not shut the old server down until the new one is verified.

If you get stuck on a step, open a support ticket; we help with the installation steps.

What is included at Datafex

Fexwall L3/L4 DDoS filtering is included free on every plan. That is the layer a game server needs; a CDN in front of HTTP does not protect the game's UDP traffic.

Every plan uses NVMe SSD. The database runs on the same machine as the game server, so storage latency turns directly into in-game stutter.

Servers are in Türkiye, at the DGN data centre in Bursa. Transit is 100 Gbps domestic and 10 Tbps international.

Setup completes automatically within minutes. Extra IPs, rDNS and firewall rules are managed from the customer panel.
