Garry's Mod Server Hosting

Garry's Mod executes Lua on a single thread, so addon complexity turns directly into single-core load. Heavy gamemodes such as DarkRP carry many addons and constantly running timers, which makes tick time critical.

What is a Garry's Mod server?

A Garry's Mod server can host almost any game mode on the Source engine — DarkRP, TTT, sandbox and murder are the most common. The server software is installed through SteamCMD and addons are written in Lua. What drives resource needs is not the game itself but the addons you run: a heavy gamemode like DarkRP plus a hundred Workshop addons needs several times the memory and CPU of a sandbox server. Because Lua runs on the main thread, one badly written addon can slow the whole server down. Workshop content is downloaded by players, so disk and bandwidth need accounting for too.

Recommended plan by player count

These values map one to one onto the VDS plan steps in our catalogue. Intermediate values can also be selected in the configurator.

The amounts in the table are the monthly net price of each processor option and match the calculation in the configurator. The value option uses DDR4 memory, the performance option DDR5. Billing period (3, 6, 12, 24, 36 months) and extra resources are calculated in the configurator. Some recommended values exceed this product's maximum, so the price is calculated from the configuration clamped to that limit; for higher resources, review the dedicated servers.

How to choose the hardware

Addon and workshop content grows storage quickly; a DarkRP server with 100+ addons easily reaches 40-60 GB. Serving first-join downloads through FastDL relieves server CPU. RAM per player is low, and the real limit is addon load.

Which processor family?

Most game servers run on a single thread, so per-core performance matters more than core count.

Ryzen 7950X

Because Lua runs on one core, the highest-IPC family makes a real difference on addon-heavy DarkRP servers.

Intel i9-10980XE

A cheaper option that is sufficient for lighter gamemodes such as sandbox and TTT.

Setup steps

  1. 1Install with an Ubuntu 22.04 template and download the Garry's Mod dedicated server via SteamCMD.
  2. 2Open UDP/TCP 27015.
  3. 3Define your workshop collection with -authkey and +host_workshop_collection.
  4. 4Use a separate HTTP source for FastDL to keep first-join downloads off the server CPU.

Common mistakes

  • Planning resources around the game. The load comes from the gamemode and addon count; Garry's Mod itself is light.
  • Installing addons without testing them one by one. Lua runs on the main thread, so a single bad addon slows the whole server.
  • Ignoring the bandwidth cost of Workshop content. Large addon collections are downloaded by every new player.

Migrating from another provider

The order matters when moving a live server: back up the game files and the database on the old server, install the same version on the new one, import the database, then update the address your players connect to. Move the database last — if both servers stay online together for a while, player data splits in two and cannot be merged afterwards. Do not shut the old server down until the new one is verified.

If you get stuck on a step, open a support ticket; we help with the installation steps.

What is included at Datafex

Fexwall L3/L4 DDoS filtering is included free on every plan. That is the layer a game server needs; a CDN in front of HTTP does not protect the game's UDP traffic.

Every plan uses NVMe SSD. The database runs on the same machine as the game server, so storage latency turns directly into in-game stutter.

Servers are in Türkiye, at the DGN data centre in Bursa. Transit is 100 Gbps domestic and 10 Tbps international.

Setup completes automatically within minutes. Extra IPs, rDNS and firewall rules are managed from the customer panel.
