Terraria Server Hosting

Terraria servers are among the lightest game servers; a vanilla world runs on 1-2 GB of RAM. With tModLoader the requirement rises noticeably, especially for large content mods such as Calamity.

What is a Terraria server?

A Terraria server hosts a persistent two-dimensional world. Alongside the official server software, TShock is the most common alternative, adding admin commands, a permission system and plugin support. Terraria is one of the lightest games on this list: the world file is small, player counts are usually low and RAM needs are modest. Per-core performance is again what matters, since the world simulation runs on one thread. On large worlds and busy servers the one thing to watch is that the world file grows over time and saving can cause brief pauses; NVMe storage shortens those noticeably.

Recommended plan by player count

These values map one to one onto the VDS plan steps in our catalogue. Intermediate values can also be selected in the configurator.

The amounts in the table are the monthly net price of the Intel I9 10980XE plan and match the calculation in the configurator. Billing period (3, 6, 12, 24, 36 months) and extra resources are calculated there.

Prices exclude VAT (20%).

How to choose the hardware

World size (small/medium/large) and the mod list are the main variables. A large world with a big modpack can exceed 4 GB. On the CPU side single-core performance is enough, as the Terraria server does not benefit from many cores. Storage needs are low, but leave space for world backups.

Which processor family?

Most game servers run on a single thread, so per-core performance matters more than core count.

Intel i9-10980XE

Terraria's resource profile is low, and one high-clock core is more than enough.

Setup steps

  1. 1Install with an Ubuntu 22.04 template; download TerrariaServer for vanilla or tModLoader for modded play.
  2. 2Open TCP port 7777.
  3. 3Create the world and configure auto-start through serverconfig.txt.
  4. 4World files are small, so frequent backups cost little; use the snapshot option.

Common mistakes

  • Buying a larger plan than needed. Terraria is a light game and extra RAM does not show up in gameplay.
  • Not backing up the world file. It is a single file, and the world is lost entirely if it is corrupted.
  • Mistaking save-time pauses for a CPU problem. Those pauses come from disk write speed.

Migrating from another provider

The order matters when moving a live server: back up the game files and the database on the old server, install the same version on the new one, import the database, then update the address your players connect to. Move the database last — if both servers stay online together for a while, player data splits in two and cannot be merged afterwards. Do not shut the old server down until the new one is verified.

If you get stuck on a step, open a support ticket; we help with the installation steps.

What is included at Datafex

Fexwall L3/L4 DDoS filtering is included free on every plan. That is the layer a game server needs; a CDN in front of HTTP does not protect the game's UDP traffic.

Every plan uses NVMe SSD. The database runs on the same machine as the game server, so storage latency turns directly into in-game stutter.

Servers are in Türkiye, at the DGN data centre in Bursa. Transit is 100 Gbps domestic and 10 Tbps international.

Setup completes automatically within minutes. Extra IPs, rDNS and firewall rules are managed from the customer panel.
