Renting a dedicated server or renting a cabinet? Cost compared

Will the hardware be ours or yours? That single question changes the whole cost structure.

When you rent a dedicated server the hardware is ours and you pay monthly rent. When you rent a cabinet, the rack space, power and network are ours while the servers you put inside are yours. In the first case hardware refresh and failure risk sit with us, in the second with you. The two tables below put the real hardware of the rentable servers next to the catalogue pricing of the cabinet options.

Which one to buy

Dedicated server rental

Rent a dedicated server when you need one or a handful of machines and do not want capital tied up in hardware. A failed disk, bad memory or an ageing CPU becomes our problem, while you use the hardware listed in the table for a monthly rent.

Cabinet rental

Rent a cabinet when you already own servers, when you will host enough machines to fill one, or when you want your own network and firewall design. The cabinet size, uplink and bandwidth options are in the table, and maintaining and refreshing the hardware stays with you.

Configure

What the cabinet price covers

On the cabinet side the table reads the service's base amount and the cabinet size options from the catalogue, with the catalogue prices for uplink, bandwidth and attack protection listed underneath. The monthly total is the sum of those selections rather than a single list price, so do not look only at the cabinet row when costing it.

Who carries a hardware failure

On a rented dedicated server we replace the failed component. A server sitting in your cabinet is your property, so spare parts, warranty tracking and the swap itself are managed by you. Running a critical service on a single machine in a cabinet therefore needs more preparation than renting does.

The point where a cabinet gets cheaper

As machine count grows, the monthly total of renting increases linearly while cabinet cost stays largely flat until the cabinet is full. The break-even point depends on your own hardware cost and depreciation period; when you run the numbers, compare the sum of the cabinet, uplink and bandwidth rows against the combined monthly amount of the machines you would rent.

Frequently asked questions

Is power billed separately with a cabinet?
The options and prices for the cabinet service are read from the catalogue in the table, and power is defined there as a separate line. For consumption-based lines the exact amount is settled in the quote.
Do I rack my own server in the cabinet myself?
Since the hardware is yours, delivering the machines and racking them is done to a plan. See the cabinet rental service page for the process and what to prepare.
Can I choose the operating system on a rented dedicated server?
Yes: you have root access on the machine you rent and the operating system choice is yours. Maintaining and replacing the hardware stays with us.
