Both run the same workload at very different costs. The split is resource sharing and monthly budget.
A VDS is a reserved slice of a physical machine's resources; with a dedicated server the whole machine stays yours. The decision is usually financial rather than technical: if your requirement fits under the catalogue's VDS ceiling, moving to a dedicated server wastes money, and if it does not, staying on a VDS means buying a bottleneck. Which one to buy
VDS (virtual server)
Buy a VDS when your requirement stays under the catalogue's VDS ceiling for RAM, vCPU and disk and you are running a single workload. There is no setup fee, you rent monthly, and raising RAM in the configurator takes minutes.
ConfigureDedicated server
Buy a dedicated server when you need permanently saturated CPU, more than 64 GB of RAM, terabytes of NVMe, or your own hypervisor. The monthly cost is markedly higher and there is a one-off setup fee, so there should be a concrete reason to accept both.
ConfigureWhere the price difference comes from
With a dedicated server one customer covers the depreciation of the whole machine plus its rack space, power and network port. On a VDS the same machine is split between several customers, so that fixed cost is shared. This is why the gap between the monthly amounts in the tables looks larger than the gap in raw hardware: what you buy is exclusivity more than throughput.
Setup fee and commitment
The setup fee row in the tables is read from the catalogue. On a dedicated server, preparing the machine, installing the operating system and configuring the network are covered by a one-off fee; a VDS has no such line because provisioning is automated. Choosing a longer term lowers the monthly equivalent on both sides, and the billing periods row shows which terms are open.
The migration path: start on a VDS, continue on dedicated
For most projects the right order is to start on a VDS. When your resource graphs show CPU saturated for months, or you have hit the catalogue's VDS ceiling, it is time to move to a dedicated server. Data migration stays your responsibility in that move: never switch servers without taking a backup first.
Frequently asked questions
- Is my data migrated when I move from a VDS to a dedicated server?
- The two services are separate machines, so migration is not automatic. After the new server is delivered the old one stays online for a while and you move the data yourself. Do not shut the old server down before taking a backup.
- Why does the dedicated server have a setup fee when the VDS does not?
- VDS provisioning is automated: once the order is approved the machine is built from a template. A dedicated server means a physical machine going into a cabinet, its disks being prepared and its network port configured. The setup fee covers that one-off work and is read from the catalogue in the table row.
- Are VDS resources shared with other customers?
- The RAM and disk you order are reserved for you. The physical machine, however, hosts several VDS instances, so the machine's total capacity is shared. For workloads that keep the CPU permanently saturated a dedicated server behaves more predictably.
- How often are the prices in these tables updated?
- The amounts are not embedded in the page; they are read from the product catalogue and refreshed with at most a five minute delay. A price change entered into the catalogue appears on this page within that window.
