Windows or Linux VDS? Templates and price compared
Same hardware, same pricing row. The choice follows your software, not the operating system.
In our catalogue the operating system is not a separate product but a template on the same VDS product. That is why the monthly amounts in the two columns below are computed from the same pricing row: the choice does not change the cost. What it changes is how you connect, which software you can install, and how much work you get out of the same RAM. The table lists the templates actually installed in the catalogue.

Which one to buy
Windows VDS
Choose a Windows VDS when your software depends on Windows: MSSQL Server, classic .NET Framework applications, a site published on IIS, or a desktop tool that needs a graphical interface. In that case it is a requirement rather than a preference and looking for an alternative wastes time.
ConfigureLinux VDS
Choose a Linux VDS when you have no specific Windows dependency. With no graphical desktop running, more of the same RAM is left to your application, and the documentation and ready-made install scripts for web, game and container stacks are predominantly Linux first. You connect over SSH.
ConfigureHow much work the same RAM does
Windows Server's graphical shell and services hold a certain amount of memory and disk from boot. Linux templates ship without a desktop, so on an identical build a larger share is left to your application. The practical consequence is that on the Windows side you may need the next configuration up. The prices in the table already sit next to each other, so comparing them one step apart is the more honest reading.
How you connect: RDP and SSH
You connect to a Windows VDS with Remote Desktop and see a desktop; you connect to a Linux VDS over SSH and work on a command line. If you have never used a command line this is a real factor in the decision, but it is a learnable one and not on its own a reason to move to Windows.
Changing the template later
Changing the operating system means reinstalling the disk, and the data on the machine is erased. Take a backup before switching templates. That is why picking the right side at first install is markedly cheaper than switching later.
Frequently asked questions
- Is a Windows VDS more expensive?
- In our catalogue the operating system is not a separate pricing row but a template on the same VDS product. That is why the amounts in the two columns on this page are computed from the same pricing row and come out equal.
- Which Windows Server and Linux versions are available?
- The template row in the table lists the versions actually installed in the catalogue at that moment. The list is not embedded in the page but read from the product catalogue, so a newly added template shows up here too.
- Which one for a game server?
- The documentation and ready-made scripts for most game server software are written for Linux, and more of the same RAM is left free. Choose the Windows side only when the server software ships a Windows-only build.
- Can I change the operating system later?
- You can, but it reinstalls the disk and the data on the machine is erased. Always take a backup before changing the template.
